Hi All! I'm running a 5K race for one of my kiddos who has pulmonary hypertension (PPHN). For those of you who do not know, severe PPHN is estimated to occur in 2 per 1000 births. In a nut shell, a baby’s blood circulates differently while in the uterus. With PPHN the baby does not change over from fetal to normal newborn circulation. The result is blood being forced away from the lungs due to high blood pressure in the arteries that go to the lungs and this decreased the body’s supply of oxygen.
Just fifteen years ago, almost half of infants diagnosed with PPHN died; today that number has declined to less than 20%, and only about one fifth of surviving infants experience long-term physical or developmental complications.
Much progress has been made and we have benefited from the work Pulmonary Hypertension researchers and diagnosticians have done. That said, there is still much work to do and we feel compelled to assist in whatever way we can until the PPHN death rate is 0%.
Please help me fight along side my kiddo!! Thank you for all of your generous thoughts and donations!
