BENEFITING: Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission Inc.
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2017
Last year as I was searching through memorial events for September 11th, this event popped up on my screen. Even though I have been in the Kansas City area for the last 5 years, I had never heard of it. The registration began June 1st and the site noted that it fills up quickly. I set my reminder on my phone for 6:45 a.m.- I wanted to be prepared for that 7 a.m. registration window. On the day of registration, I was filled with pride to help support local firefighters in their climb of remembrance and give my time to a great, worthwhile event. The day of the climb came and I helped to pass out climbers registration packets and then I was sent to the stairwell. They placed me on a very important floor and one that I began to see the faces of the firefighters change when they got to it. The 81st floor.... The last known contact with FDNY. To be standing in a stairwell and hear firefighters set off their alarm and say the names of the brothers their climbing for was a moving and sombering experience. One that is hard to explain but fills your heart. I had the opportunity to hold one of the fireman's hoses that had all 343 names written on it. Some of the climbers choose to carry these hoses up the 110 floors. It is incredible the drive, passion, and courage these men and women have to do what they do and on a day off?? They climb in full uniform- helmet, oxygen tank, ax, and more to remember the 343. I will continue to support and help out with this event every year.
