BENEFITING: Joslin Diabetes Center
ORGANIZER: Joslin Diabetes
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Running the Boston Marathon for Team Joslin hits very close to home... My sister Teresa was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on October 21, 2014 after I helped her train for a half marathon...
On some of our long runs, she would get sick, or not feel well, but we attributed it to the hot weather, the week before and day of the half marathon she wasn't feeling well but still ran, it was mile 9 when her body cramped up due to her blood glucose being so high, she walked two miles and jogged the remaining. When she crossed the finish line she was very sick and by the next morning the glucose had gotten to her eyes; her vision was blurry. For the next week, she went to see her primary care physician a few times and on the day he diagnosed her, her blood glucose was at 449 which is extremely high and she was in danger of slipping into a coma. She started insulin injections right away!
She was advised that Joslin Diabetes Center was the best in research and care, she continued with 6-8 injections of insulin and 10-12 fingers pricks to check her sugar every day. In August of 2016 she was put on the insulin pump, which delivers insulin continuously 24 hours a day and a continuous glucose monitor that provides real-time glucose readings and alerts her when her blood sugar is dropping too low or going too high, thanks to Joslin for providing these kinds of tecnologies but my dream is bigger... to have a world free of Diabetes.
