BENEFITING: JOHN RITTER FOUNDATION FOR AORTIC HEALTH
ORGANIZER: JOHN RITTER FOUNDATION FOR AORTIC HEALTH
EVENT: 2015 LA Marathon
EVENT DATE: Mar 15, 2015
I have had the pleasure of being a Team Ritter supporter for the last 3 years. This year when I was at the Ritter Sitter for the New York City Marathon, I was moved by a survivor telling her story of her aortic dissection. As she told her story, I couldn't help but think, this could have been my sister or a close friend. I felt moved to do join Team Ritter and do my best to raise funds for such a great cause.
When I was telling a friend and colleague about my new adventure to join Team Ritter's LA Marathon team, Brian shared with me that he lost his brother to an aortic aneurysm in 2010. I immediately asked if I could honor him in my run for Team Ritter. Rex Messmann died suddenly in 2010 and left behind his wife, daughter and family. I am honored to run for Rex and his family.
I will run in memory of Jonathan Miller who died suddenly of an aortic dissection in 2005. He left behind a beautiful daughter, now 9, and wife. Friends of Jonathan have formed a non for profit, Jonnie's GoodGuys, to raise funds and awareness for heart health. Jonnie's GoodGuys is what brought me to The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health. We can keep his memory alive and Do Good Stuff in his honor.
I will run for my dear friend Maria Clausen who survived an aortic dissection in 2012 and lost her leg due to circulation complications following her surgery. She lives every day to the fullest and inspires me to do the same.
I run for those who cannot and to raise funds to benefit the research of aortic health.
Thank you for supporting me and for Doing Good Stuff!
JOHN RITTER FOUNDATION FOR AORTIC HEALTH
The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health (JRF) is proud to be an official charity of the ASICS LA Marathon to take place on Sunday, March 15, 2015. This is an amazing opportunity to increase awareness of thoracic aortic disease, as well as raise funds to support education and research. We are so honored to have been chosen.
Funds from the LA Marathon raised for the JRF will benefit the John Ritter Research Program in Aortic and Vascular Diseases (JRRP) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) to support research to identify genetic risks for aortic dissections.
“The funds raised by Team Ritter will allow us to continue our genetic research to identify genes or altered DNA that increases an individual’s risk for an acute aortic dissection. By identifying who is at risk, we can prevent the premature deaths due to aortic dissections,” said Dianna Milewicz, M.D., Ph.D., director of UTHealth’s John Ritter Research Program. “It will also help us spread information to both physicians and the public about symptoms and genetic risk factors for aortic dissections, including the fact that this condition can run in families.” Milewicz is also professor and George H. W. Bush Chair in Cardiovascular Research in the Division of Medical Genetics at the UTHealth Medical School.
Individuals interested in joining Team Ritter to run the ASICS LA Marathon, help us increase awareness of aortic disease, and fundraise are encouraged to submit an application here.
