EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
I can't tell you how excited I am to be part of Team Joslin! I will run the 2014 Boston marathon, together with my wife Simone, in honor of our dear friend, Mary Ann Saunders Marin. Mary Ann has been living with type 1 diabetes for nearly 44 years and has been receiving outstanding care for decades at the Joslin Diabetes Center - which has allowed her to thrive and live a full life!
Not only am I training like crazy for my run, but more importantly, I’m going to leverage all that training and hard work to help raise money for the Joslin Diabetes Center. I'm reaching out to you to help me raise $10,000 for this worthy cause!
Any amount you can give is very much appreciated. Just click the big donate button, and please give what you can!
Here is some more information about my cause. When we used to live in Boston (West Roxbury and Wellesley), from 1990-1997, Simone and I developed a very close friendship with Mary Ann and her family. During that time, I was on the faculty at Harvard School of Public Health (Department of Nutrition) and Boston University School of Medicine (Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute). I have many friends and colleagues in the Boston area and hope I can count on their support for this great cause!
Since 1997, I have been director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. I am passionate about the role of diet, lifestyle, and micronutrients in promoting optimal health and preventing chronic disease. Our goal at the Institute is to help people everywhere add years of health and vitality to their lives and reduce suffering from cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other debilitating diseases. As leader of the Institute, I want to be a good role model: I eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy body weight, take my multivitamin/mineral and some other dietary supplements, and exercise regularly. One of the joys in my life is to go on a long run with Simone and our three Labradors in the beautiful hills surrounding Corvallis.
I am so pleased that I can now bring together my passion for running with the good causes of raising money for the Joslin Diabetes Center and, most importantly, honoring and supporting my dear friend Mary Ann in her long and courageous battle with type 1 diabetes! She is truly an amazing woman full of life, wisdom and joy, despite all the hardship and suffering in her life.
Thank you so much for your support!
