The Story

In every Seder, around the world, Jews retell the story of the Exodus. The story hinges on the experience of being a stranger and the Seder is designed to remind us of that history, to ensure we can truthfully say, “we know the heart of the stranger because we were strangers in Egypt.” With the continued conflict in Syria and the climate for refugees and immigrants in America, it is imperative now more than ever that we care for and love the stranger.

JCARR has welcomed three families over the course of the past year, two from Syria and one from the Democratic Republic of Congo. To continue our work helping refugees in the community, JCARR is in urgent need of additional funds. We need to raise $10,000 dollars in order to continue to provide rental assistance, translation services, occasional personal necessities, and transportation for our JCARR families. And, in light of the situation in Syria and other places in the world, we want to be ready should the need arise to resettle additional families.

Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement

The Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR) is a collaboration between local synagogues to co-sponsor refugee families who are new to the New Haven area. The synagogues have a history of individually sponsoring refugee families, dating back to the 1980s, and felt a need to reinvigorate those efforts in light of the recent refugee crises worldwide. While the synagogues span different denominations of Judaism, all recognize that one of the Torah’s strongest themes is the obligation to love the stranger. Please join us in supporting those values by helping refugee families integrate into the broader New Haven community.

If you have any questions about JCARR or would like to get more involved, please contact our coordinator, Jean Silk, at jsilk@jewishnewhaven.org
