Team JAF joins together to support the Joe Andruzzi Foundation's mission of providing help, hope and a reason to smile for cancer patients and their families by contributing financial and emotional support when it is needed most.
Over the past two and a half years I have come to have a love/hate relationship with running. As I got the news on November 26th that I made it into the 119Th Boston Marathon the overwhelming feeling of emotions was unreal. I can honestly say I cried for a good part of the day, and yes, it was a good cry. Words cannot even express the emotions that came over me. After the initial “high” I started to think of which Team I would like to be a part of. Now as many of you may know, I am involved with several organizations, Special Olympics, Alzheimer’s Association , and Dedham Food Pantry to mention a few.
Here is my story:
In late summer 2005 I got news about my mother Cathy that no one should ever have to here, “you’re mother has Cancer”. I didn’t even have the opportunity to absorb what the Oral Surgeon had just told me and my mom was wheeled back into the room with me. I did all I could to fight back the tears and emotions that go along with hearing the “C” word, so too save face, I did it. My mother was oblivious to the fact that the doctor knew the outcome before the biopsy even came back. I have to say this was probably one of the most difficult times in my life. My mom has always been my rock, she has played both roles as mother and as of father to me I couldn’t imagine life without her.
As her surgery date approached, I could see how hard things were getting for her, and felt helpless that I could not do anything to elevate her pain. September 20th was the day, I remember it like it was yesterday, I remember the car ride into Boston, waiting as the surgery took many hours, but most of all I remember how she looked in ICU.
As months followed my mom had to undergo many radiation treatments and then intense oxygen treatments. She was a fighter and nothing was bringing her down. I am happy to say my mom KICKED CANCER”S ASS!!!!!
So this is for you MOM, I have chosen this foundation because I want to help other families who have gone through this to have emotional and financial support through such challenging times. Sometimes a smile is all it takes.
