THE STORY:

Family and Friends,

IRONMAN FOR ASHLEY        #IMforAsh

On September 7th, 2014 I will be competing in Ironman Wisconsin with the aspiration of raising funds and awareness for Riley Hospital for Children, a place that is close to my heart. I ask that you take a moment to read and learn about my story behind the race in hopes that you decide to generously donate to our cause as well as spread the word!

(I’ll start by saying one quick statement that I want you all to take into consideration. The point of this race/fundraising page is NOT for you to know that I race triathlons. I could care less if you know how many hours I spend on my fitness or that I might have a cool bike. Secondly, this page is not for you to know that my family carries a sad story. We, as a family, use the past for the greater good of the future. The point of this entire fundraising page is to give all of us the opportunity to give back to children that are less fortunate than us. Please understand this!!)

Throughout the 26 years of my life I have been blessed with, in my opinion, the best support system the universe has to offer. This support system is made up my parents (Kim and Mary Beth), my brother and his wife (Charlie & Carla), my sister (Ashley), my fiancé (Danica), and every friend/coach/teammate/fan/teacher along the way. Each and every one of them has supported my relentless, and sometimes crazy, efforts to compete. To all of you—thank you. If there has ever been a way for me to give back to you, this race is how I plan on doing so. For those that know me well, this story will be a repeat for you. For those that don’t, please take a minute to learn why I am asking you to give back to one of the most powerful charities our community has to offer. Here it goes....

In April of 2005 my sister Ashley was tragically killed when she was involved in a car accident involving a drunk driver on the campus of Indiana University. For those that knew Ashley, we know she carried with her one of the most passionate and caring personalities to ever grace this earth. I can’t begin to describe to you the impact of losing her had on our family, campus, and community. Ashley participated in a student-run philanthropy called Indiana University Dance Marathon, where she served as a Vice President. Since 1991, IUDM has been the largest Children’s Miracle Network dance marathon in the country, and has raised over $16 million for Riley Hospital for Children. IUDM is comprised of a couple thousand passionate students who work year round for one reason: the Kids at Riley Hospital. Since 2005, the marathon has also been dedicated to the memory of my sister.

I personally decided to go to IU in 2006 with hopes of becoming involved in IUDM. I wanted to do whatever it took to spread the word about Ashley’s legacy while educating the community on how they can help the Kids at Riley. I wanted to dedicate each day to serving the Kids at Riley Hospital, just as Ashley had done. In 2008 I served as a Vice President, and in 2009 I served as President. My 4 years at IU were some of the best of my life, and I have IUDM to thank for that.

Soon after graduating college, I picked up the sport of triathlon as a way to stay in shape and also compete. Over the past two years, triathlon has become a huge part of my life. I absolutely love the effort I put into swimming, biking, and running. I have raced sprint, olympic, and half Ironman distances, but have always had the goal of finishing a full Ironman distance race and being able to call myself an Ironman. Recently though, I realized there was a void in my life and that I was still “missing something.” While in college I was dedicating much of my time and energy to IUDM—more specifically to Ashley and the Kids. But now, I am dedicating much of my time and nearly all of my energy to this sport and it was still not enough! Then it hit me. I am doing all of this for the good of only one person-me.

Let’s fix this problem. From now on, my training is going to be solely dedicated to giving back to IUDM, the Kids, and the legacy of ALC. The point is, I cannot do this on my own because I need YOUR HELP. This fundraising page is going to be my motivation for continuing my training towards completing the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run at Ironman Wisconsin. No longer is this race for me, this race is for something much greater than us. The purpose of the training and completion of Ironman Wisconsin is to:

  1. Raise funds for IUDM (all proceeds go directly to Riley Hospital for treatment and research for the Kids)
  2. Raise awareness for Riley Hospital within the community and…
  3. Continue to preserve and spread the legacy of my sister Ashley Louise Crouse

From now on every mile I spend swimming, biking, and running I will be thinking of Ashley, IUDM, the Kids at Riley Hospital, as well as each and every one of YOU. Until I cross that finish line I am going to do whatever it takes to spread this opportunity to all ends.

*I must reiterate, the point of this fundraiser is NOT for you to know I race triathlons. The point of this is to give back to those who may never be able to give back to us. Please take this opportunity to work with me in doing so. Here are 3 ways you can help (feel free to choose all three!!):

  1. Donate funds for IUDM/Riley Hospital through this fundraising page ***ALL DONATIONS WILL INITIALLY GO TO THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION. ONCE THE RACE IS OVER THE FOUNDATION WILL ALLOCATE ALL FUNDS DIRECTLY TO IUDM***
  2. PLEASE pass on the link to this fundraising page to let others know how they can help (http://www.iudm.org/IMforAsh) —use Email, Facebook, Twitter, etc!
  3. Words of encouragement—I am easily motivated and I appreciate the support towards this goal! Follow my training and progress on Strava!!

I have extremely high hopes for this fundraiser and I think we can make a huge difference together. Please contact me via email (caseycrouse@gmail.com), facebook or phone if you have any questions!! Thank you all for your support!
