BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
Two years ago I underwent a 7 1/2 hour surgery on both of my hips. I had competed in sports my entire life at some pretty high levels. Even as a Division 1 scholarship athlete I had ambitions of taking things to a greater level. Most of those dreams came to a painful and alarming halt. After all of those years of training and pounding my body there came a point where I couldn't tie my own shoes or sleep more than a few consecutive hours without pain. What followed that surgery to regain my quality life actually woke me up even more...
About a year later I was in the operating room again but this time it was in a cancer center. After noticing a huge lump on my neck and getting a battery of tests done, I had a biopsy and most of one lymph node was removed. I realize everyone's days are numbered but being an active and healthy person I was not prepared in the slightest to say goodbye. Who knows when their "number will be called" but staring at the sweet faces of my two young children and my beautiful wife...I selfishly could not hold back the tears. It just wasn't my time and it didn't seem fair.
Speaking of being "selfish"..it dawned on me that the sport of triathlon is often very much a selfish endeavor. It takes so much time, internal focus, money, sacrifice, and effort but often times the only one benefitting is the athlete. While sitting in the cancer center I decided to do something different. That day I crafted up a plan to help kick off a team of Ironman athletes that would each compete for a charity and cause that they were passionate about. My company (My Portfolio Guide, LLC) would foot the bill for some jerseys and at least get the ball rolling. Other than that it would simply take a lot of sweat, tears, and dedication to make a real impact.
My goal is to raise funds and awareness to fight cancer. I'm making it pretty easy for anyone to help. Maybe you have a company that can donate $1,406 and get your logo on our slick cycling Team MPG jerseys or you are a generous friend and can donate $140.60? Even if you're a kid with just a paper route I'm asking that you consider making a $14.06 donation! Anything helps and I would be honored to compete one last time knowing that it matters to you and someone who needs the help as well.
Help me get to the starting line of Ironman Arizona. I'll do the rest (swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112, and run a 26.2 mile marathon). With your generous support I look forward to handing over a check to someone in a hospital that is hanging on with everything they have just to see another day.
Thank you in advance and may God bless you.
