BENEFITING: Imerman Angels
ORGANIZER: Imerman Angels
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Last year I ran the New York City Marathon to raise money for an outstanding organization called Imerman Angels. I was overwhelmed at the outpouring of support I received from so many. I told my story of watching my wife accept the news of her breast cancer diagnosis and bravely fighting and winning her battle. I also acknowledged the dozen years my Mom had spent fighting the same disease and the lessons in courage she taught me along the way before she ultimately passed away. In the past I have run in her memory and in tribute and love to my wife whose courage and grace still inspires me. But last year for the first time I ran as a member of a team. And I cannot imagine a greater team to be a part of than Imerman Angels.
Imerman Angels is a non-profit group dedicated to providing one-on-one support for those in their fight against cancer, whether patients, survivors, or caregivers. Their core belief and mission is that no one should ever have to fight this disease alone. Like many I have been touched by cancer. Like many I have given everything I can to help loved ones. However I could never provide the service of Imerman Angels. Even those with great personal support systems know that even the best intentioned people cannot really know what they are going through. That’s where Imerman Angels comes in. Through their network IA matches anyone seeking cancer support with a “Mentor Angel”. A Mentor Angel is a cancer survivor or caregiver who is the same age, same gender, and importantly someone who has faced the same kind of cancer. This service connects the patient (or caregiver) with someone who REALLY DOES KNOW. They provide this service absolutely free. That is why I am reaching out to you now.
Last year on the night before the marathon I had the honor and privilege of having dinner with my IA teammates. This was the first time I had actually met anyone from the team. I was already impressed with what I knew of their work and the folks I had corresponded with. But meeting the team in person humbled me as to the tremendous character of this organization.
I could not be more excited to be a part of Team Imerman Angels taking part in the 2016 New York City Marathon. Imerman Angels is a not-for-profit 501©(3) organization and your donations are tax-deductible. By supporting IA you will be making a difference in the fight against cancer and for the individuals who are in that fight today and tomorrow.
