BENEFITING: PERFORMING ARTS WORKSHOP INC
When David was in the 4th grade, he struggled academically and socially and had an *Individualized Education Plan. He had few friends and would often cry when he felt frustrated. That same year, his father was deported to Mexico. His family was in crisis. David was in tears almost every day.
Things started to turn around when David joined Performing Arts Workshop’s afterschool program in capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. The class gave him a safe and engaging space to learn. Salé, David’s capoeira teaching artist, helped him find his voice and his place in the ever-changing and unpredictable world he and his family were now living in.
David’s enthusiastic response to capoeira didn’t go unnoticed: Salé asked David to perform in both the 2013 and 2014 student showcases. While other students may have been more technically advanced, David was one of the most joyful learners in class and on stage. Best of all, his father came home last spring and saw David perform at the Brava Theater -- it meant everything to me, Salé, and the entire school community.
David shows us that creativity and self-expression are essential pieces in a child’s education. If you’re able, please make a gift today.
