Pursuing My Passion One Step At A Time...
Last spring, I received an email from Human Rights Campaign (HRC). They were recruiting runners for the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM), as a fundraiser for the Athletes for Equality (AFE) program. I knew that I had to run the marathon not only for myself, but for other members of the LGBT* community who do not have the privilege to be out and proud. I enjoyed the challenge of training in the summer heat and fundraising for the first time.
I had such a positive experience that I plan to run the race again this year. I passionately support the LGBT* community and will fight until the LGBT* community has equal rights. I am actively involved and hold several positions, including:
--Stewardship Director of NC Triangle HRC Federal Club
--Vice President of PFLAG Triangle
--Board Member of Rainbow Community Cares
--Volunteer at LGBT Center of Raleigh and coordinator of Triangle LGBT Game Night
Running in the MCM through HRC’s AFE is only natural, as it combines my love of supporting my LGBT* family with my love of running. The benefits of running would include:
--Increased funding for HRC Foundation (HRCF)
--Increased visibility and awareness for HRC and HRCF
--Symbolic showing of how far we have come since Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) got repealed (especially with strong military presence at MCM)
I am passionate about HRC because:
--HRC undoubtedly played a major role in the repeal of DADT.
--HRC gave me the opportunity to phone bank against North Carolina’s Amendment One, defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Although the Amendment ultimately passed, it did cause the issue of LGBT* rights to garner national attention and increase momentum for our rights.
--Although momentum is shifting, HRC still needs our financial support to achieve full marriage equality and nondiscrimination. I can’t think of a better place for HRC to be represented than at our own nation’s capital.
The MCM will take place on October 25th in Washington, DC. My goal is to raise at least $2,000. HRC and HRCF together improve the lives of LGBT Americans at home, at work, and in the community. I hope you will support me, HRC, and HRCF by making a tax-deductible donation.
