The Story

EVENT DATE: May 12, 2018

This is the 11th year for an event previously known as the Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Fund Ride and Walk.   Proceeds benefit Zoo New England’s Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Fund as well as the charitable good works that the Hollis-Brookline Rotary supports, expanding the impact of sponsorship donations.

About the Event

The Bike Ride and Walk begins and ends at the historic Lawrence Barn, featuring multiple routes specially designed for cyclists or walkers ranging from beginner to expert.  Choose from the 10 mile Bike Ride, 25 mile Bike Ride, 50 mile Bike Ride or 3 mile walk.   Riders, walkers, volunteers, family, friends and community members are all invited to a festive post-ride picnic that includes the Zoo New England Animal Showcase, Local Farmers Show and Tell, and a Raffle with Silent Auction table.

To sign up and participate, please click here.  Early-bird registration fee is $30 before April 1, then $35 until the day of the ride.  All registrants will receive a free T-Shirt and a ticket to the post-ride picnic!

About the Hollis-Brookline Rotary Club

The Hollis Brookline Rotary Club is a service organization whose mission is to serve the charitable interests of our local, regional, and global communities. Our service work takes many forms, including providing financial support, lending a helping hand and supporting projects worldwide. We partner with businesses and individuals in the local area for financial support and engage the community with fun and healthy events that additionally serve to support the charitable work we do.  In Hollis-Brookline Rotary, our members find an important and needed role to make a positive impact inside and outside the club.

What will the funds support?

100% of the proceeds raised from this event will go to charitable causes including:

  • The Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Fund provides opportunity for Zoo staff members to pursue conservation projects, education opportunities, research initiatives and other wildlife-focused efforts
  • Student scholarships and teacher grants
  • Veterans' needs
  • Food pantries and soup kitchens
  • Wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, etc.
  • Community projects that benefit our local towns and schools
  • International projects that improve health and sanitation, provide emergency solar power, improve education
  • Promoting peace through the international student exchange program and our Celebration of Peace, cohosted with Rivier College.

What's up with the bee in the logo?

Each year the ride has highlighted a different animal or bird, one that could be found in a zoo and that zoos work to support with education, research and impactful programs.  This year we have chosen the honey bee to highlight the ride as part of our farming communities.  The bee  also held special significance to Jonathan Gilmour so it's fitting that it's part of an event honoring his work and memory.
