The 2016 NYC Marathon: A (Brief) Thank You and a Long Winded Race Report.
November 07, 2016
BENEFITING: Huntington's Disease Society of America, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
On November 6th, 2016 I'll be running the NYC Marathon to raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA).
While in the past I've typically limited my running to when someone is chasing me, I'm lacing up my sneakers to support this cause that's very near and dear to my heart. My wife Emilie's family has been devastated by Huntington's Disease, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Without getting too deep into the details, my mother-in-law grew up as one of five sisters. Just last year she lost the third of her sisters to HD and long before that, her father fell victim to the disease. Fortunately, the chain has been broken, as neither my mother-in-law nor her surving sister are carriers of the disease. Thus, there is no one else in our family who is at risk.
Although I haven't suffered directly in watching my loved ones deteriorate before my eyes, the impact of such an experience is palpable throughout my family-in-law. And that's my motivation. I'm volunteering to suffer (again, not a runner) through a 26 mile race so that hopefully those diagnosed with HD will suffer less in the future.
A bit on the actual organization: the Huntington's Disease Society of America is the premier nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by Huntington’s disease. From community services and education to advocacy and research, HDSA is the world’s leader in providing help for today and hope for tomorrow for people with Huntington’s disease and their families.
HDSA's network of chapters, affiliates, HDSA Centers of Excellence, social workers and support groups provides a seamless connection for help, education and outreach to HD families and health care professionals across the United States.
All funds raised will help support HDSA's Mission of helping those affected by HD and their families.
By registering for the NYC Marathon on the HDSA team, I have committed to raising a minimum of $5,000 for the HDSA, and I need your help to surpass that goal!
I ask you to support this wonderful cause by making a tax deductible contribution that feels comfortable to you.
Thanks so much in advance for your support.
