BENEFITING: STEEL CITY GREYHOUNDS INC
ORGANIZER: STEEL CITY GREYHOUNDS INC
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
I am running for Steel City Greyhounds for a FIFTH straight year! This will be the fourth time that I run a half marathon in my adopted hometown of Pittsburgh yet I am still as excited as the first year. And, I get to run Pittsburgh for the cause that makes me feel the most at home--for the greyhounds!
Why greyhounds you might ask? Because I owe a lot to them. Kevin and I adopted our first greyhound, Nina, at a time when I was teaching part time and writing my dissertation. Nina provided the perfect companion for lonely days spent at home working, including impeccable timing for getting me out of the house. She also got Kevin and I volunteering for the organization, thus providing a greyt community for us to be a part of and making Pittsburgh feel like home for us. My first trip to the racetrack to pick up greyhounds (and all of the subsequent trips) had a profound effect on me. It was difficult to look at all the hounds waiting to be selected by an adoption group or adoptor and not want to take them all home. I knew that Nina and our second hound, Sophie, were once in this very situation. Greyhounds are born into the racing industry with varying levels of affection, discipline, etc. during their racing days. And, I know that all these wonderful dogs want is love, a soft couch, and a dotting human. All of this makes running quite easy -- I get to do it by choice and I know that your donations help keep the organization's adoption fee affordable for most and makes a couch and loving human possible for so many hounds. Thank you for all of your donations, words of encouragement, and support. Each of the half marathon miles will be dedicated to you as I think of all of you on race day. All of your efforts will also keep me accountable to my training and help me get to my 2 hour 10 minute goal (9:55 min/mile)!
