Grandma Alberta's Hearing Aid Gift
Organized by: Alberta Laktonen
Event Name: CrowdRise Halloween Challenge
Hearing is vital to our well-being, as it helps us interact with people and the world around us. It is also important to our safety (imagine not being able to hear police sirens or fire alarms). Hearing loss is strongly associated with decreased quality of life, cognitive decline, and depression.
Alberta is 84 years young and active. She still helps her sister, Agnes (10 years older), several times per month by driving her to medical and other appointments. She does her own shopping, cooking, and cleaning. She is a social person, and like most elders likes to tell stories and visit. However, this has become increasingly difficult over the past few years, for Alberta as well as those who love her.
Grandma Alberta will need an evaluation by an audiologist and high-quality hearing aids in order to correct her severe hearing loss. She may also need other devices, such as a phone that will transmit directly to her hearing aids. The total cost is expected to be approximately $6000, an amount of money Alberta does not have. I am hoping friends, family, and community will come together to help my grandma get her hearing, and her life, back.
