How GRAM VIKAS'S Water and Sanitation program can change lives: The warmhearted Natabar's story
Natabar Sahoo from Karanjia village (Harichandanpur block, Keonjhar district) - a 60 year old differently able, who faced an enormous amount of difficulty in defecating earlier. Unlike others, he could not walk for miles on end to find a secluded place to defecate. He used a manmade hole close to his house, often dug by some family member, which not only made him feel undignified but also brought various water borne infections into his house.
Now, he proudly uses a toilet to attend the call of nature. Puti Sahoo, his 58 year old wife, happily tells us that her grandchildren no longer fall sick on a regular basis; and since her legs are slowly giving away, she finds the toilet very convenient.
A continuous involvement is still needed:
Even if in 2010 the UN recognized "the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right", nearly 50% of the Indian households have no sanitation facility and more than 60% of the worldwide open defecation takes place in India.
In the state of Odisha, the situation is even worst as most rural communities still lack access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
How can you help?
Your support will help us address this challenge by construction of toilet and bathing room for each household in a village in Odisha, India. Through the campaign we plan to raise $30,000 for providing water and sanitation in 75 households in a village in Odisha, India.
The construction of a toilet and bathing room costs around $400, but keep in mind that each contribution helps us march towards our goal:
No gift is too small !
- It takes just $10 for a Toilet pan
- $20 will provide a family with a toilet pan and 3 taps
- $48 will provide hygiene training for school children
- $150 will help us buy the necessary hardware (steel, cement, doors, etc.) for the construction of one toilet and one bathroom for one household
- $400 will help us build a toilet and a shower room for 1 family
Your support will go a long way in providing clean drinking water & sanitation unit. Friends, together we can restore dignity and health in the tribal communities of Odisha.
