Our demand on the planet’s natural resources is now 50 percent greater than what nature can renew. That means it would take 1.5 Earths to support humanity’s current Ecological Footprint. The mounting costs of our ecological overspending include everything from deforestation, fresh-water scarcity, and biodiversity loss to climate change and more economic instability and inequality. While this may sound grim, we remain optimistic because we have the knowledge and tools to tread more gently on our planet every day.
What can YOU do? Start by learning your own “Ecological Footprint” with our online calculator. Our Ecological Footprint Calculator measures how what you eat, where you live and how you travel affect our planet’s resources and then offers simple lifestyle changes to reduce your Footprint. For example:
- By switching from driving a car to riding a bicycle for a 10-kilometer daily roundtrip commute to work, we can use 10 times fewer ecological resources. Switching from car to bus uses four times fewer ecological resources.
- By heating water with solar-thermal collectors rather than fossil energy, we can reduce our Footprint by 100 times.
Our CrowdRise Goal
Our online calculator is only available on the Internet and can't be easily accessed by the more than 1 billion people worldwide who own smartphones today. Our goal is to raise is $10,000, which with the Skoll Foundation match will enable us to create a mobile app version of our Footprint calculator to reach at least 2x as many people as our online calculator. We expect at least 50 percent of calculator users to change their behavior in at least one way. Multiply these small shifts in behavior by the number of people on our planet and the results add up to huge progress in preserving our natural resources for future generations!
Your contribution of $100 could enable 5,000 more people to use our calculator and learn how to live more sustainably.
Your contribution of $50 could enable 2,500 more people to use our calculator and learn how to live more sustainably.
Your contribution of $25 could enable 1,250 more people to use our calculator and learn how to live more sustainably.
Students in China, educators in Australia, and scientists in Switzerland are among the one million people who use our online calculator in 12 languages each year. We want our Footprint calculator to be used by millions more students. We want it to be used by visitors at the world’s best museums, as it will be at the Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã) in Rio Janeiro, Brazil, when it opens in 2015. (The museum is creating its own version of the calculator as an interactive exhibit.) And we want the Ecological Footprint to shape policy decisions at the highest levels of government.
Advancing the science of sustainability since our inception in 2003, Global Footprint Network has worked with 62 countries on six continents to help preserve our planet’s natural resources and make them central to decision-making. We also have worked with partners in numerous cities to drive sustainable decisions, including San Francisco, London, Milan and Calgary. Most recently, we began working in India to empower villagers to make informed decisions about development in their communities.
