BENEFITING: The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
I am honored to be running the New York City Marathon as part of the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation (GDMF) team. As one of only five team members, I feel I'm part of a special group of people who have taken on a tremendous responsibility to not only raise funds for a fantastic cause but also to get the word out of just how much Glen was and is an American hero.
Nicole, GG and I moved to Glen's hometown of Winchester two years ago and while we never got to meet him we have been lucky enough to meet some who knew him and we have learned enough about him to realize just how much of an impact he had on so many.
Glen died on September 11, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya while saving the lives of 30 Americans who were under attack. He died so they may live. I will never be able to fathom the courage posessed by him or the degree of mental toughness which resided within him. If his death is all you have ever heard about Glen, I encourage you to learn more. Look him up and read about him. Get inspired by his zest for life which seems to have been limitless.
The GDMF now exists to see that the spirit of Glen will live on. Its mission states that "our focus is on providing current and former special operations professionals, from all branches of the government, the means necessary to transition and succeed in civilian life. We are also enabling the children and families of these soldiers the ability to mature and grow through recreation."
Please help me as I take on the challenge with my teammates of training and raising money for this wonderful cause. For me, marathoning is a labor of love and hate all wrapped up into one. As I train on the trails of the same woods where Glen cultivated his love of the outdoors, I will think of him often. He will be my role model and my inspiration and I will try like hell to channel some of his mental toughness when the going gets tough.
