BENEFITING: The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
I grew up in New York and have wanted to run the NYC Marathon since I was in high school. It has been one of those "bucket list" types of things, but always seemed to get pushed aside because of one thing or another...living in Telluride, Colorado for the past 20+ years, having kids, work, life in general. But last fall, my dear friend Robyn Shaw (who also lives in Telluride and is on the GDMF NYC Marathon 2015 team) and I were talking about it and decided we were going to finally make it happen. And best of all, we were going to try to run for Glen Doherty (the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation). Glen was one of Robyn's oldest and closest friends and I had met him a few times through her. He was such a terrific guy...so full of life, smiles, amazing energy. When I found out we were actually going to be able to run for Team GDMF, I was thrilled.
Glen Doherty was one of the four Americans killed in a terror attack in Benghazi, Libya on September 12, 2012. GDMF was established in honor of Glen’s life and his beliefs. The foundation aims to bring education and recreation to those in need with a focus on providing current and former special operations professionals, from all branches of the government, the means necessary to transition and succeed in civilian life. GDMF also enables the children and families of these soldiers the ability to mature and grow through recreation.
This will be my first marathon. I have run many high-altitude mountain races, but never 26 miles of purely paved love. I'm excited, a little nervous, but most of all honored to be running in Glen's name.
