BENEFITING: The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation
ORGANIZER: The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
The first week of my sophomore year at New York University I witnessed the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. With neighbors, friends and family members in the NYPD and FDNY, I knew many of the first responders taking part in the rescue mission at the World Trade Center. As a native New Yorker, I wanted nothing more than to be a part of that mission, myself. For several days I tried to join the ranks of the volunteers headed to the WTC, but I was turned away, because as an18 year old college student I pretty much had no skill set that could be of any use. “NO” was not an answer I was willing to accept. Over those several days, I acquired an MTA vest, a blue hard hat, and a gas mask. I hitched a ride with a convoy delivering food to the first responders, and I just walked into the WTC. For 24 hours I tried to help wherever I could. Those 24 hours shaped the rest of my adult life, and led me to public service.
September 11, 2012, Glen Doherty was serving his country in Tripoli, Libya. Upon receiving word that the United States consulate in Benghazi was under attack, he led a relief mission to come to aid of his fellow Americans. The United States government had no air assets in Tripoli, so there really was no way for Glen to get Benghazi. It is my understanding, from talking to Glen’s friends, that “NO” was not an answer he was willing to accept either. Glen acquired a plane, flew to Benghazi, and joined in the fight. Glen gave his life that day, protecting the lives of my State Department colleagues. For that, I feel that I owe him a debt of gratitude. More importantly, Glen ran to the fight and gave his life protecting the lives of his fellow Americans. For that, we all owe Glen a debt of gratitude.
This is why I have volunteered to run for Glen's charity in the 2015 New York City Marathon. It will be my first marathon, and I am confident that it will be quite the challenge! GDMF is a great cause that supports those who put everything on the line for our nation. I ask you to join me, by supporting Glen's charity with whatever donation you can make. Thank you for your generosity.
