About #GivingTuesday

Join the #GivingSoCal movement!

Show the world how generous Southern California is!

There are a lot of reasons that people donate to nonprofit organizations. Some donate because it makes them feel good. Some donate for tax purposes. Some donate because they have been personally affected by an issue that an NPO is addressing. But most of them donate to a specific organization because they were asked. Join the Center for Nonprofit Management in asking all of Southern California to give this December 1st.

#GivingTuesday is a global movement that celebrates work that organizations are doing and encourages people to contribute and give. CNM is helping people do this easily and connect to donors, old and new.

In the last few years, Black Friday has gained steam and has become a shining example of consumerism. Some shoppers will even camp out overnight in front of stores to get a good deal.

Online retailers caught on to the craze in the early 2000’s and created Cyber Monday. According to Wikipedia, Cyber Monday 2014 online sales grew to a record $2.68 billion, compared with 2013’s $2.29 billion.

In 2010, small businesses hopped on the money train as well, starting #SmallBusinessSaturday.

In response to the focus on consumerism, the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation started Giving Tuesday in 2012, which lands on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (this year it will be December 1st).

What is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global movement that celebrates work that organizations are doing and encourages people to contribute. The Center for Nonprofit Management is bringing that movement to Southern California, by providing the tools organizations need to have a successful social media campaign.

Millions of dollars are raised for great causes when people come together for this national day of giving. #GivingTuesday is gaining momentum; donations grow exponentially each year. In 2014, donations grew 63% to raise an estimated total of $45.68 million. Cities like Seattle, Miami, Houston, and Atlanta have had great success energizing their residents to give on Giving Tuesday.

Southern California could use some help in increasing giving. According to UCLA’s 2014 State of the Sector Report, giving in Los Angeles lags behind its own pre-recession giving as well as behind giving in Northern California. Only 40% of Angelenos report that they donate to charity. We’d like to help change that.

What is #GivingSocal?

#GivingSocal is Southern California’s #GivingTuesday movement. CNM is helping local nonprofits use this national day of giving to easily connect to donors, old and new.

We are working in collaboration with CrowdRise, an innovative, cost-effective online fundraising website, to provide webinars, toolkits, and an easy-to-use online platform. In addition, Channels 2, 5, and 9 have agreed to support the campaign over Thanksgiving by sharing news stories and — with the support of our Mayor and production support by Time/Warner Cable — PSAs to encourage people to give to a cause they care about.

There is great potential for both nonprofits and donors in Southern California this December 1st. Invite your friends, family, and colleagues to join you.

What is crowdfunding?

The #GivingSocal movement works through crowdfunding, which is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.

To learn more about crowdfunding, check out our recent blog 5 Things Nonprofits Should Know About Crowdfunding.

How do I join?

Help us build the #GivingSoCal movement.

First, sign up to receive donations at www.givingsocal.org. The set-up is easy, but if you need any help, email GivingSoCal@crowdrise.com and they will answer all of your questions. You can also join us for a webinar that covers frequently asked questions and set up. There is one on November 3rd and a repeat on November 5th. The only cost involved is a small credit card processing fee taken out of the donations.

Second, let your network know you’re participating. We’re releasing a toolkit very soon packed with ideas, tips, and sample copy that will have sample language so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Ask your network to help you raise money – they can build their own fundraising page to go along with your #GivingSoCal page.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, our media partners will be spreading the word and catching the attention of millions of reviewers, listeners, and readers – all potential donors. It helps to spread the word yourself through emails and social media.

And then it’s over. It’s a quick campaign that has the potential to bring lots of money and attention to your organization before the end of the year because of #GivingTuesday’s place on the national stage.

#GivingTuesday is the nation’s most popular day for giving back. Join us.

The Story

The Story / Crowdfeed

Giving Socal is the place to find great nonprofits in Southern California!

Do you want...

  • Safer streets?
  • Less smog?
  • Smarter kids?
  • Safer schools?
  • Less traffic?
  • Clean ocean waves?

Invest in Southern California Nonprofits.

And tell your friends to do it too!

Why give?

Imagine a world without nonprofits. The homeless would have no respite, thousands would go hungry, and even more would go without the medical care they need. But even those of us who are lucky enough to have food, shelter, and a caring network of friends and family would be without museums, without people to fight for our civil rights, without a place to adopt our next Snowball, Fluffy, or Rover. Our children would be without places to play and clean beaches on which to build sandcastles and memories. Or a vital blood supply when a real disaster happens. Fortunately there are people like you to keep us all alive and well.

Show the world who you are by giving to the causes you believe in.
