BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2016
The mission of Girls on the Run NYC is what got me … “WE INSPIRE GIRLS to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”
It's an organization with a "vision of a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.” Yes please - I’ll run for that!!
Minus the running part, as a health coach, this is what I’m doing for grown women, so I thought … imagine what kind of world it would be if we didn’t have to “fix” wounded women because we built strong girls?
I decided to make my goal of running a half marathon happen a month out from the 2016 NYC Half. The big BUT was if I could find an organization to run for that would inspire me and fit my ethos.
Having lost my sister to cancer five years ago anyone's first guess would've been a cancer organization but I felt a pull towards something more proactive. I figured enough money goes to researching problems but does enough go to preventing problems?
When I saw Girls on the Run I thought “I’ve been a girl on the run my whole life” except maybe as a girl running away. How apropos!
I went to sign up for the Girls on the Run team but it was full. However, in my there's-a-way-around-everything kinda nature, I emailed them in hopes they'd find a way. I decided if they got me on the team it's meant to be, otherwise this whole thing was just a crazy idea.
Within 12 hours they found a way and solidified being my kinda crew! I was half-elated and half-what-did-I-just-commit-to?! After all it was only 5 years ago I was on the sidelines of the NYC Marathon cheering for my best friend with a sign that said “GOOD FOR YOU! I ONLY RUN WHEN CHASED!” Ha!
Says two Girls on the Run ….
“I learned that I am the boss of my brain.”
“I want to change the world by doing BIG things.”
So when I’m struggling to get to the end (because I will be struggling) I will remember two things … my mind is in charge of my body and there are millions of little girls across the globe who need to believe they CAN do BIG things!
And that my sister would be proud of.
Donations of any kind are received in gratitude and appreciation. :)
