BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2016
I am so excited (and a little nervous...) to be running my first half marathon on March 20th, 2016 (my 24th birthday)! I've been thinking about running a long race like this for a few months now and when the opportunity to run with Girls on the Run presented itself, I knew it was the perfect time to take the leap and sign up. I first learned about Girls on the Run as a collegiate member of Gamma Phi Beta. Girls on the Run is Gamma Phi's partner in our philanthropic mission of Building Strong Girls and my chapter was able to both raise money and volunteer with the organization. When I moved to NYC in 2014, I was looking for ways to get more involved in the community and saw Girls on the Run NYC as the perfect place to volunteer. I will soon complete my second 5K as a Sparkle Runner and continue to volunteer as often as I'm able. This half marathon is a goal for me personally but I'm also thrilled that it allows me to set a goal of raising enough money to support five girls for an upcoming season. Please considering helping me reach this goal and donate today!
ABOUT GIRLS ON THE RUN
Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through fun, engaging lessons and conversation-based running games. The 24-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful a contribution to community and society.
