BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I wanted to share with you that on November 6th, I will be running my fourth NYC marathon. Many of you have heard from me previously around this time of year and I want to start by thanking you for your tremendous support. It truly makes a difference as you’re pounding through 26.2 miles!
This year, as I run the NYC marathon, I have found myself at an intersection of passions. Building self confidence in girls is very important to me, and last year I became a board member of the international organization, “Girls on the Run”. GOTR works with girls from 3rd through 8th grade, inspiring them to be joyful, healthy, and confident through a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. At the end of the program, the girls run a 5K, (often times their very first). It’s amazingly powerful to watch these girls cross the finish line!
For me personally as a young girl, I gained confidence through running, and it’s a privilege to give this gift back to girls today. As I’ve been training these past few months, I think about the women in my life who have inspired me, who have great strength and confidence, and who lift women up rather than tear them down. And, during this time it takes me back to a high school friend that I cherish today, Patty Stoltz Corcoran. I cannot think of a woman who better represents these characteristics. Patty is the epitome of strength, and she’s shared that strength raising four beautiful, confident and strong daughters. And, she now has four granddaughters and three grandsons!
Nearly six years ago Patty was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). She has fiercely taken this disease head on, just as she’s done everything else in her life. But she has done it with a degree of positivity and spirituality that is unwavering, and so very inspiring.
So this year, I am dedicating my race to Patty. I will be thinking of Patty, her journey, and all of the women in my life who are working together to make this world a better place.
I hope you will join me in sending good vibes to Patty, “lifting up” a young girl in your own life and if you would like, making a small donation to Girls on the Run.
I am humbled by your support.
