BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN GREATER BOSTON
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN GREATER BOSTON
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
My love for GOTR Boston began with neon hair scrunchies, pink hair spray and bedazzled barrettes! When I moved to Boston after graduating from college I didn’t know many people in the area. A friend from college told me about GOTR in North Carolina and I researched whether Boston had a local chapter - they did! In an effort to meet other women, I volunteered for the crazy hair station at the GOTR Boston 5K in the Spring of 2011. The girls’ energy was magnetic. I knew GOTR was my forever home!
I coached four seasons for GOTR Boston from 2011 to 2013 and made multiple life-long friendships with strong women who I admire. Years later they were bridesmaids in my wedding! In 2013 I moved back home to California and have stayed involved in GOTR here in Los Angeles as a Solemate, finance committee member and ambassador. This year I helped launch our Auxiliary Board with the goal to raise awareness of GOTR in the local community.
I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much.
Please join me in supporting GOTR and ensuring that all girls have the opportunity to participate by making a gift today.
More about GOTR:
On April 17, 2017 the Girls on the Run Greater Boston Marathon Team, made up of 15 runners will take to the start of the Boston Marathon to help ensure that every local girl realizes her limitless potential!
Girls on the Run is a life-changing, non-profit program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
The 20-lesson Girls on the Run curriculum combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) running event with lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem solving skills and make healthy decisions. All of this is accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.
Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run volunteer coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete the celebratory Girls on the Run 5k. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result—making the seemingly impossible, possible and teaching girls that they can.
Since 2010 Girls on the Run Greater Boston has reached more than 1700 girls. Our goal is to never turn an interested girl away based on her family's ability to pay for the program. Funds raised through the Boston Marathon Official Charity Program will go towards our scholarship fund to ensure that every interested girl is able to participate and will also help us to expand into more towns, schools, and community centers to help ensure that every girl realizes her limitless potential!
