Event Name: Christmas Challenge

THE STORY:

Project GOAPOS [Great Astronomical Observatory of the Pacific of Solar Optics].

Is a Science-Technology initiative which plans:

  • To build the first Sun Astronomical Observatory in the country for Aerospace Sciences Research/Outreach.
  • To help young poor people to improve their cognitive skills.
  • To generate employment for people involved  in the Education sector.
  • Etc.

FUPACTECNO.org.co [Foundation of the Pacific for Advancement of Science and Technology], is an Organization composed by a Team of several Engineers and Scientists, who think than the Education is the key to reduce the inequity and poverty. Because, it is the way to give to the youth the knowledge as a powerful tool to achieve the people confront their adverse circumstances by them selves. Two members of the Scientific Team currently are researchers working directly in NASA, and the remaining 4 have worked in projects funded by NASA in several Research Centers in the United States. Most of them worked on the development of the first colombian satellite 'Libertad 1', built by the University 'Sergio Arboleda' in Colombia, launched to Space in 2007.

The Team members are not rich persons, just smart people who need to find resources to help a lot of people through Science and Technology in very poor zones.

Once Project GOAPOS is built, it is self-sustaining, because also it will offer services massively to institutions and many people from other regions of the country and the zone with ability to pay. Gains generated will be reinvested in education for more poor youth of the Pacific region (West of Colombia).

Initially, we plan to reach approximately: More than 10.000 students and population in general in short term, reaching 20.000 in medium term, and 50.000 in long term, helping them to improve their cognitive skills, in several rural and urban areas of Colombia, specially the Region Pacific (Western coast), offering them scientific outreach of Aerospace Sciences and Astronomy; also orientation on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

It is clear, the Colombia Government doesn't distribute the economic resources equitatively, according to the World Bank (http://datos.bancomundial.org/indicador/SI.POV.GINI), and the situation is worst in the Pacific coast (West region) of Colombia, so like the most of underdeveloped countries. Then, GOAPOS is a good alternative to help the young poor people in their education process, because it would help the colombian youth in places where the inequity affects the education sector and the youth.

The Project GOAPOS has 3 main parts:

1. Solar telescopes. We already purchased them. See them here: http://www.fupactecno.org.co/#!telescopios/c30u.
2. The Metallic dome and metallic structure base.
3. The Offices.

The money raised here will be used specifically to build the parts 2 and 3. See the architectonic design here: http://www.fupactecno.org.co/#!goapos--sede-quibdo/c12zl.

Project for which, we have our own ground, large enough to build the observatory, and even to expand it more in the future.

Then, if you really want to help Education, help us!

Thanks. Best regards.
