General Assembly Supports Nepal
Organized by: OrphanGift.org
The entire General Assembly community — team members, instructors, students, alumni, partners, and friends — is teaming up with our friends at OrphanGift.org to provide urgent support for children affected by recent disastrous earthquakes in Nepal.
UNICEF estimates that at least 1.7 million children's lives have been disrupted as a result of the quakes, and many of Nepal's schools have been destroyed or damaged. OrphanGift.org and a coalition of organizations including UNICEF, Hands.org, Learning Planet, Abari, and Tents for Nepal is planning to build emergency classroom structures that will make sure teaching can commence by the end of June, before monsoon season further paralyzes the country.
As UNICEF has stated, this project is vitally important: if displaced children cannot return to an educational setting, they may be forced to turn to working in the fields — a life path that could become permanent.
These classroom structures will also provide a sanctuary where psycho-social support can be offered, reducing the long-term trauma of this disaster among some of its most vulnerable victims. Each classroom is instructed to last around 15 months; the Nepali Ministry of Education has approved the designs, shown in the slideshow at left. In keeping with the best interests of the Nepali people, this will be a community-driven project in which the local population will receive professional support to carry out the work.
As a family of people committed to education and empowerment, we at General Assembly want to help as much as we can, to ensure that the children of Nepal are not destined to become child laborers with significantly diminished pathways to opportunity and mobility. Please join us in raising funds to provide educational resources, shelter, and support for these children.
A gift of $500 USD will ensure education for 40 children until their schools are rebuilt. A gift of $250 USD will ensure education for 20 children, and a gift of $100 USD will ensure education for 8 children. After a nominal transaction fee, all donations will go straight to costs on the ground in Nepal; without any overhead fee, funds will be allocated strictly toward building the most efficient classroom shelters before monsoon season.
Thank you in advance for your support and love. Please share this page with anyone who might like to join this relief effort.
