Meet Christina Vorvis, a PhD candidate at UCLA studying pancreatic cancer and Dr. Shyam Natarajan, PhD, a bioengineer and assistant researcher at UCLA. Help Christina and Shyam raise $5,000 to establish a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) after-school program at UCLA tailored for Fulfillment Fund high school students. The program is intended to educate students on the basics of science and engineering, expose them to world-renowned campus facilities at UCLA and, importantly, encourage innovation and creativity in the hopes of motivating students to pursue STEM-related careers. All donations will go towards purchasing scientific supplies and engineering kits to provide hands on workshops, led by Christina and Shyam.
There are plenty of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs out there, but not enough qualified workers to fill them. In a large city like Los Angeles, 30% of job openings are in STEM fields but only 11% of the population has a STEM degree. Therefore, it is our duty to provide opportunities to teach and educate students at the high school level on the career possibilities and outcomes of pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field. In line with the objectives of the Fulfillment Fund, we aim to empower youth through education.
At the Fulfillment Fund, our vision is that ALL students, regardless of their circumstances, will one day have the opportunity to attend college, graduate, and actively participate in transforming their communities and creating a better society.
