BENEFITING: Free To Run Inc.
ORGANIZER: Free To Run Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I'm excited to be running the 2016 NYC Marathon with Free to Run, a fantastic organization that empowers young women in conflict zones through athletics.
Afghanistan is one of the most challenging places in the world to be a woman. It frequently ranks amongst the lowest of countries in terms of educational opportunities, life expectancy, health, and access to justice. Despite significant advances that have been made since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, human rights organizations have reported a regression in women’s rights over the last few years. Its future stability is far from clear.
Especially now, it is critical that we support women and girls in Afghanistan and provide them with opportunities for empowerment and education. Free to Run provides regular sports activities for students at the high school and university level, including hiking, running and skiing. The organization also provides international sports opportunities, including comprehensive team training, for those who possess particular leadership potential.
Since moving to Kabul in September 2015, I've had the opportunity to meet many brave and enthusiastic young women who are defying prevailing cultural norms. I hope my journey to the marathon in November will inspire them to keep pushing against the boundaries that circumscribe how fully they may live their lives.
