ORGANIZER: Free To Run Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Last year I tried to sign up for the Iran Marathon, and I was told I was not welcome because I am a woman. Coming from Norway, I am not used to direct discrimination like this. It hurts! It sucks. But in many countries, like Iran and Afghanistan, this is the every day reality for girls and women. Let´s change it.
To be able to play, use your body, to be FREE TO RUN and to feel that you are strong is such an important part of being human. To be able to use your body is such an empowering feeling. My goal, and the goal of FREE TO RUN, is that every girl and woman should be able to run, to play, to be strong, if they want to.
This is why I´m super excited to be running the 2016 NYC Marathon with Free to Run, an organization that empowers young women in conflict zones through athletics. I love to run, and it makes me happy. Research shows it makes other people happy too, and healthier. Free to run works to give more girls and women around the globe the choice to run and play. More women running is a step to a better world. Let´s make it happen.
Our main work is in Afghanistan, one of the most challenging places in the world to be a woman. Human rights organizations have reported a regression in women’s rights over the last few years. Afghanistan is currently undergoing a military and political transition, and its future stability is far from clear. It is a critical time to support women and girls in Afghanistan and to provide them with opportunities for empowerment and hope.
Free to Run launched its programs in Afghanistan in September 2014, thanks to the financial support fromRacingThePlanet, and friends in the running community. The first Free to Run office was established in Central Highlands Region in January 2015. We are now operating in three provinces of Afghanistan. We provide regular sports activities for students at the high school and university level, including hiking, running and skiing, and have activity teachers at several refuge centers.
Please consider donating to Free to Run, an organization that believes in the power of sports to transform the lives of women and girls. Here's some more information about the organization:
We believe everyone should be FREE TO RUN!
The ability to participate in physical fitness and enjoy outdoor adventure is a human right and fundamental freedom. Free to Run is an NGO that uses running, fitness, and adventure to empower and educate women and girls from conflict-affected communities where repressive gender roles have prevented girls from playing sports, exercising, or sometimes even leaving their homes.
This November, Free to Run’s first crew of volunteers are running the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon and raising funds for our programs in Afghanistan and Hong Kong. As athletes, we have all witnessed the power that sports has to inspire confidence, teach us discipline, and provide us with the opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun. We believe every girl should grow up benefitting from these opportunities.
A donation to Free to Run will help provide athletic equipment and programs to refugee communities in Hong Kong and after school curriculums in Afghanistan.
