Raising money to fund both the testing of these kits and the investigation into the crime is essential in Detroit's process of healing and moving forward. This is about standing up and saying every single community member is relevant and valuable.
Out of the dedicated work from a few individuals, Detroit has emerged as a leader in how to handle this national problem. Other cities are looking to us for guidance. But there is so much to do– testing rape kits by itself isn't enough; we need to then open investigations to find and prosecute rapists who thought they could get away with a crime. The good thing is that the testing is bringing back overwhelming results, proving that it's never too late to bring justice.
