EVENT: 2014 ASICS LA Marathon
EVENT DATE: Mar 09, 2014
I'm at it again, running a marathon and raising funds for The Friends4Michael Foundation!
The day after completing the NYC Marathon in November I was experiencing the typical runners high after finishing a marathon. I was ready to sign up for my next race and when I found out the foundation had spots in the LA Marathon in March 2014 I jumped at the chance to be on the team!
The foundation, Friends4Michael Foundation, is named after a 14 year old brave young man that succumbed to a brain tumor after a valiant 14 month struggle. This young man was the son of my high school friend Mike Kwinn.
Michael J. Kwinn III was a wonderful, gifted 13 year old boy when he began complaining of dizziness and headaches. When his treatment for sinus problems did not help, doctors scheduled an MRI and on March 12th, 2002 discovered a brain tumor. One week later, after Michael’s first of eight surgeries, they discovered he had a malignant, Grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma in his brain stem. Sadly, the life expectancy for this type of tumor rarely exceeds a year.
Michael’s parents made many friends during their 18 years in the Army, and after his diagnosis they came forward and offered their assistance and tangible things like baseball tickets and video games, anything to help him out. Michael’s response to his father was, “Dad, I really don’t need these things, but so many people want to help, we should ask them for donations to find a cure. It might not help me, but it might help others.” Before Michael passed away on May 31, 2003 he had raised over $65,000 in support of The Brain Tumor Society.
Pediatric brain tumors are the #1 cancer related cause of death in children. There are over 3,000 new cases each year. The Friends4Michael Foundation was formed to help in ways beyond The Brain Tumor Society. Through fundraising efforts they have helped over 300 families in 30 states and continue to grow.
The Mission of the Friends4Michael Foundation is to support children like Michael and their families, to keep alive the memory of Michael and his spirit, to increase awareness of the devastating effects of brain tumors on afflicted children and to continue to “Fight for a Cure” for this horrible disease.
I am paying my own airfare and hotel in LA and am training on my own with only Michael on my shoulder to help me through the winter training days ahead. He was with me when I ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 2011, there again for me in NYC and I am confident he'll be in LA waiting for just the right moment to be there for me.
Thank you in advance for your support and 100% tax deductible donation. With your help I hope to reach my fundraising goal of $500 by February 15, 2014.

The Friends4Michael Foundation directly supports families that are dealing with the devastating impact pediatric brain tumors have on their lives. We send $300 to families in immediate need of financial support. $300 keeps the car running for the round trips to the hospital or helps pay for a new mattress so a sick child can get a good night's sleep while enduring chemo-therapy. $15,000 directly supports 50 families with significant needs here and now.
