It all started in June 2006 with 17 cats, two veterinary technicians and 450 square feet of room. These cats were taken from a rescue that didn’t have the means to care for them any longer, and the fear of these cats possibly being euthanized forced Sarah and Anna to finally act on their dream of opening an adoption guarantee, limited admission cat shelter. From this, Fort Collins Cat Rescue was born in June 2006. After establishing a foster program for kittens and with community support, the rescue was able to move into a facility nearly twice the size within three months.

Fort Collins Spay/Neuter, a program of Fort Collins Cat Rescue, was launched in March 2007 to address overpopulation of dogs and cats in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming. As the only truly low-cost spay/neuter clinic in the area, the clinic targets students, the elderly, low-income pet owners and other animal rescue organizations, though it is fully open to the general public.

Today, Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic (the name was officially changed in 2011 to more fully incorporate the clinic) is housed in 6,000 square feet and employs three dozen part- and full-time clinic and shelter staff. The shelter cares for up to 90 cats on site. In addition, up to 350 cats and kittens at any one time are cared for through the organization’s foster home program.

To further reduce pet homelessness, FCCRSNC also provides spay/neuter and pet food assistance to low-income pet owners through our Prevent A Litter Plus (PAL+) and Kibble Supply programs, has a Community Cat Program that traps and sterilizes feral felines, and, in 2018, opened a Behavior Center to keep pets in homes.

To date, the shelter has found homes for more than 17,500 cats, and the clinic has spayed or neutered over 59,500 dogs and cats.
