Hi everyone!!! :)
This summer, I will be doing a fellowship with a nonprofit called Community Water Solutions (CWS), an organization that brings clean water to rural villages in Ghana.
Waterborne diseases are a LEADING cause of DEATH in developing countries. In fact, more people have died from waterborne diseases than any war has killed through guns. Though this is alarming, here is another astounding truth: over 844 MILLION people currently do not have access to clean water. This means that hundreds of millions of people are suffering from a basic necessity that most of us, myself included, take for granted.
The water crisis is grim, but CWS offers a practical and sustainable solution that is inexpensive for the villages it works in. Not only is it impressive that CWS has brought clean water to over 28,000 people, it is also amazing that 100% of the water treatment centers CWS has set up are still running today!
As a fellow, I will work with communities that are currently using unsafe, murky surface water. I will help them set up a water treatment business that their community will own and operate. The center, which my team and I will start up for them, will distribute clean water to the villagers at low cost. By utilizing this method, the water treatment center can sustain itself while providing the villagers with clean water, employing local villagers to treat the water (which particularly provides women with a way to make an income), and keeping the profits in the community (since the businesses are owned and operated by the communities they serve). Our group will be in Tamale for three weeks (June 18th to July 10th). Afterwards, the communities we’ve worked with will continue to run the centers and CWS will check up on how they are doing. I am fundraising to provide equipment needed to build the water treatment centers I will be personally constructing.
I am really excited to be volunteering because the water crisis is a very serious one and I want to make a tangible difference (I also want to include you in this process)! :) So, please donate to this great cause! It means a lot to me!
