BENEFITING: Common Threads
ORGANIZER: Common Threads
EVENT DATE: Oct 12, 2014
My name is Leann Duggan, as many of you know, and I will be running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 12th, 2014! This year I will be running 26.2 miles for a charity called Common Threads. Common Threads believes about the importance of nutrition and physical well being for kids. Common Threads is a national nonprofit that is committed to educating communities about healthy food choices through hands-on experiences. Dedicated to taking a major stand against childhood obesity, Common Threads' programs empower children and adults with fundamental cooking skills and nutritional education. These programs give participants something every individual is entitled to, the tools to lead healthier lives.
I have running, cross-training, and spinning to thank for a 45 pound weight loss journey, and that journey is not yet complete! Running and living a healthy life has changed my life in many ways other than physical, it has changed my whole outlook on life that is now filled with joy! I am running for Common Threads to spread this joy with kids around the country that might not have access to the knowledge of healthy food, cooking, and exercise without these programs. As a first grade teacher by day and spin instuctor by night I have the best of both worlds, kids and nutrition, in my life. I couldn't ask for two more rich and fufilling jobs!
What will my goal of $1,000 do for Common Threads?
My goal of 1,000 dollars will supply 200 healthy meals for students patricipating in Common Thread's after-school cooking program, Cooking Skills and World Cuisine. The core program, CSWC is a dynamic hands-on cooking class that engages students' taste buds and minds. In each class, students cook a healthy dinner recipe and leave the program being able to cook a balanced meal and safely use common kitchen tools.
Common Threads hosts a 3 week summer camp for underprivileged youth each summer. This year we are proud to be hosting summer camp in Chicago, Miami and Washington, DC. This camp is a three-week camp focused on cooking, physical fitness, and food-science education. The students spend five days a week cooking, exercising, and participating in a food science lab. Summer camp also serves as a safe place for underprivileged youth to spend their days.
$1,000 will allow for TWO children to attend this 15 day camp.
Common Threads also provides families and students with a variety of after-school cooking classes. Family Cooking Class teaches parents and their students how to cook healthy and economic meals. The class focuses on family participation, healthy ingredient substitutions, and convenient cost-saving recipes.
$1,000 would allow for knives and other kitchen equipment (cutting boards, measuring tools, aprons, etc.) to be purchased for these classes.
Please consider donating anything you can, even 5$ would be amazing, to this cause that relies on donations like yours to be successful for these kids!
Be on the lookout for training updates, pictures and stories! Now get out there and run!
