BENEFITING: Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech
ORGANIZER: Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
My name is Denae Kessel Dostal and I will be running the 2016 NYC Marathon for Team Clarke! I am excited to combine two things I am very passionate about: running and helping kids! I am a Physical Education/Health teacher at Littleville Elementary School in Huntington, MA which is a part of the Gateway Regional School District. I strive daily to make physical activity a fun experience for my students in hopes they continue to make healthy choices throughout their life. I have been an active part of the Clarke School family as my sister, Devan Folts, is Executive Assistant to the President at the Northampton, MA campus. I also have been fortunate to see the amazing benefits of Clarke services over the years for several of my own students in the Gateway district.
Although I was always active in sports and fitness, I was never a runner. Running seemed like an unattainable challenge. However, in the summer of 2013, I was inspired by two fellow PE teachers (and runners) in my school district, Tim Gamble and Missy McCaul, so I decided to give running a try. I began with a Couch to 5K plan with the aspiration of running a race that fall. I could barely run for 30 seconds without stopping to walk at the beginning but I kept at it. I finished the plan and three months later completed my first 5K race. I was hooked. I took my training a day at a time and kept moving forward. I have since finished dozens of 5 & 10 K's, three half marathons and in October of 2015 completed my first full marathon, the Baystate Marathon, in Lowell, MA.
I am the most proud that I have taken my students along with me on this journey of running. I run after school three times a week and they have witnessed my progression and have been my best cheerleaders. I want to show them that anything is possible when you are committed to trying your best.
I look forward to updating you all on my training and fundraising goals. Thank you for your support of Team Clarke!
