As a recent alum of City Year Detroit (2007-2008 Corps Year), I am proud to attest to the significant development of City Year as an organization both locally and nationally in the past few years. If you are an alum of about my Corps year or older, City Year's approach to tutoring and mentoring in schools has changed dramatically since you served as an AmeriCorps member. If you are not yet familiar with these changes (or if you are new to the organization) --it's time to meet City Year 2.0!
The 'new' City Year is a data-driven, highly strategic organization focused on ending the nation's drop out crisis. With research support from Johns Hopkins University, the Whole School Whole Child model has revolutionized the way City Year Corps Members reach students here in Detroit and across the nation. Following the ABC approach (poor Attendance, disuptive Behavior, and Course failure in math and english), Corps Members are able to target the students that need our help the most. Corps Members provide these students with dedicated academic, social, and emotional support that otherwise would not be available to them, to keep students in school and on track to graduation.
In short, it's a great time to be an alum, friend, fan, and donor of City Year! We've achieved so much, but still lack the necessary funding to help bridge the gap in Detroit's public schools. I encourage you to visit www.cityyear.org, or contact me to learn more about this incredible orgranization.
Your donation, in any denomination, is appreciated and necessary to help reach our goal that all students in Detroit will graduate on time, and with the confidence to achieve success for a lifetime thereafter.
