BENEFITING: The Children's Room
ORGANIZER: The Children's Room
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
As someone with close relationships to my parents and brothers, I know how lucky I am to have never needed an organization like The Children's Room. However, not everyone I love has been so fortunate. My cousin Patti Quigley lost her husband Patrick in the September 11th attacks when she was pregnant with their second child. The support of The Children's Room allowed Patti and her eight year old daughter Rachel to heal. Patti is an inspiration to me not only because of her incredible strength and resolve, but because of the way she has turned her experience into a way to make a positive impact for people around the world. After her husband’s death, my cousin Patti was overwhelmed by the enormous outpouring of emotional support from around the world. Soon after the United States invaded Afghanistan, she became aware of the vast differences between her experience as a widow and the treatment of her counterparts in Afghanistan. Struck by these disparities, Patti has dedicated her life to women’s causes.
I love running, so this opportunity to support The Children's Room and reach my personal goal of running a marathon before I turn 30 seemed like a natural fit. I will be dedicating my run to my late grandmother Ellen Scannell. My Nana gave birth to 6 children by her 30th birthday so I figure the least I can do is run 26.2 miles by mine!
As a New Hampshire native, I have always loved the Boston Marathon. I am running for my cousin, her family, and the support they received from The Children’s Room when they needed it most. I believe in both giving back and paying it forward, and I want more families in need to be able to receive the help and services they did in their time of need.
I am excited to be running the 2014 Boston Marathon and to be fundraising for The Children's Room. While services are free of charge to families, it costs The Children’s Room $1,500 to enroll a child for one year, and every dollar I raise will directly support grieving children, teens and families. Nothing is guaranteed in life, including our time with those we love most. Thank you for your support.
