LEGACY: Beach Sweeps are more than picking up trash, they are about collecting data. Volunteers record each piece of debris on data cards. While challenging, it is essential to the success of the program. It ensures that the volunteers' good work becomes a legacy of information to help reduce marine litter. The data is used in an annual report that provides evidence to reduce litter, serves to educate the public and drives efforts to combat marine pollution. HISTORY: Clean Ocean Action's Beach Sweeps started in 1985 with 75 volunteers. Since then, over 101,000 volunteers have collected information on over 5.19 million pieces of trash from the Jersey shore.
