My father was diagnosed with cancer in 1993 and lost his battle at the end of that same year. It was a rapid decline for which doctors had no explanation. It wasn’t until years later that the truth was revealed. In 1999 we received a letter from the US Marine Corps. It explained that from the mid 1950’s to the late 1980’s US Navy sailors, Marines, dependents and civilian employees, drank and bathed in water contaminated by fuel depots on Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. My family had been stationed there; I was born on that base in 1981.
For nearly 30’s years the base brass knew of the problem and failed to act. The affected wells weren’t shut down until the late 1980’s after over 30 years of leaking noxious chemicals into the water supply. Those affected were denied health care for years. Finally, in August 2012, President Obama signed into law the ‘Janey Ensminger Act’ to provide health care for those suffering from related health conditions. For my dad it’s too late, but for up to 750,000 of America’s Armed Forces Servicemen and their families it’s not. Please help support their fight and bring a cure to a terrible disease.
