Arts & Scraps recycles 28 tons a year and serves 275,000 children with a $320K budget and 10,000 volunteer hours. We are celebrating our 25th anniversary and service to 2 MILLION kids. Donations help bring hands on learning and creativity to metro Detroit schools, with an emphasis on children in low income areas. Thank you for your help--we will be good stewards of your gift. Pass the word!
Here’s a little more about us:
Arts & Scraps is a non-profit in Detroit that uses recycled and reused materials to help people of all ages and abilities think, create and learn. Our goal is to provide quality educational and creative experiences to underserved children in Metropolitan Detroit while minimizing the negative impact on the environment.
Arts & Scraps reuses materials from businesses and community people’s attics and basements to make creative experiences affordable and accessible to every economic level. We are passionate about nurturing individual creativity to stimulate learning and encourage independent thinking. Each Arts & Scraps experience encourages problem solving and critical thinking. We value the unique contributions of our staff, volunteers, funders and business & community partners. Because of this, we are able to motivate our community to see value for reuse in materials that traditionally have no value and cannot be recycled in a traditional manner.
In addition to kits, our store helps us to get matieral back out into the community and used again. Each bag we sell at $7.50 a bag with our cost of $10 per bag. But, because this is the heart of our mission, we work to make this possible.
Our community and corporate partners contribute 10,000 hours annually, which would be the equivalent of 4.8 full time staff people. We could not do what we do without our partners that bring volunteers and donate to us monetarily as well as with their “stuff”.
Student transportation is difficult, so we visit schools and organizations with workshops in topics they already teach. Students invent and create in hands-on experiences that reinforce science, math, language arts and social studies. They then shop in the 26' Arts & Scraps Mobile, stuffing a bag with more recycled materials to take home.
