“Art Experiences Honoring the Service of Returning Soldiers” is a scholarship fund for returning soldiers who have been wounded or are facing the continued impact of their military service to attend Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Every $2,500 raised supports two returning soldiers to take a one or two-week workshop at Arrowmont. These workshops develop skills, inspire new thinking, build self-esteem, and even facilitate embarking on a new career.
Military service is difficult, demanding and dangerous. Over the 20th and 21st centuries, the United States has sent millions of men and women into war to defend America’s interests. There are differences in these modern wars. While overall combat deaths have decreased, increasing numbers of service members return home with severe injuries, some visible, some invisible.
Research shows that providing returning soldiers with opportunities to express themselves can help them cope with the most common symptoms of post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and major depression. Research has also found that engaging in the arts can address and help heal the effects of physical injuries in soldiers. More important, it says to returning soldiers that we value their service and want to give them a unique and restorative experience.
Arrowmont is an ideal place for returning soldiers to learn a new skill, enhance an existing skill, maybe embark on a new career, or develop a hobby. Arrowmont is nestled on a 13-acre campus in the center of Gatlinburg, TN…the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
Time at Arrowmont offers the opportunity to find fresh ways of seeing, understanding, problem-solving and communicating—for people of all skill levels, backgrounds and ages. The experience is time apart from the everyday—meaningful, moving and affirming—enriching life in unexpected ways.
