$7000 Goal Reached!
March 18, 2016
BENEFITING: American Red Cross
ORGANIZER: American Red Cross Massachusetts Region
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
I began my Posting as British Consul General to New England in September 2012, so my first experience of the iconic Boston Marathon was the infamous one. Watching the tragedy of the 2013 marathon bombings unfold will, sadly, be a defining moment of my time in Boston.
But it was also a re-affirming experience: being part of the City's efforts to respond, seize control, care for victims and restore confidence was incredibly uplifting. We had over 350 British nationals running in the 2013 Boston marathon, and hundreds of family members and friends concerned for them. Miraculously, we located them all, safe and well, thanks to the extraordinary emergency services of Boston and Massachusetts, and in particular the Red Cross. The compassion, professionalism and commitment of those men and women will be my abiding memory of that terrible day.
I am lucky now to have the chance to create a new marathon memory. On April 18 I will be running the 2016 Boston Marathon, as a member of Team Red Cross.
I am honoured to be running in such an historic race on behalf of an organisation that does so much valuable work around the world, often supporting my foreign service colleagues working to help British nationals in distress. My Posting here in Boston concludes in 2016, and I cannot think of a better way to honour the city I have had the privilege to call home for the last 4 years.
That said, it will be enormously hard work, so it has to be worthwhile! I am asking for your help through sponsorship. Please give generously: knowing my pavement pounding will translate into your support for the Red Cross will make the cold early mornings and blisters just that little bit more bearable.
Thank you for your support!
