Since 1996, the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) has partnered with more than 30 indigenous tribes, outfitting them with the tools and knowledge to monitor, sustain and protect their ancestral rainforests.
Our experience prepared us for one of our biggest challenges to date: defending the rights of uncontacted peoples—and their forests—in the northwest Amazon.
In July, seven members of an isolated tribe emerged from the rainforest and made peaceful contact with villagers near the Peru-Brazil border, seeking help. Through the use of translators who spoke a related language, the Indians described violent attacks on their communities—elders were massacred and their longhouses were set on fire. The most likely culprits: illegal loggers and cocaine traffickers.
Many uncontacted peoples in the western Amazon face similar threats: not only are they witnessing increased incursions into their territories, but even peaceful encounters can introduce diseases against which they have no natural immunity.
Through ACT’s innovative efforts, we are working with local scientists, contacted tribes and government officials to protect these cultures and their rainforests, all while avoiding contact.
Through overflights, ACT established the location of some of these communities, and also assisted the Colombian government with essential information so that it could pass legislation prohibiting mining, logging and other destructive activities in this territory. In addition, ACT partnered with the Colombian National Park Service and local indigenous communities to create an indigenous park guard program to monitor and protect the land. Through these actions, ACT gives a voice and protection to people who otherwise have no way to defend their rights.
By donating to ACT, you partner with us and enable us to carry out this important work, as well as our other initiatives in northern South America. Thanks for being part of the team!
