Help me support Disabled Sports USA!
EVENT DATE: Apr 08, 2018
Welcome to our fundraising page and the quest for the next challenge!
Moving away from the high altitude climbs of Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua and Denali I thought what better way that to move to the warmer climate of Morocco and the Sahara Desert.
Yes, the Sahara Desert.
It’s called Marathon des Sables and it’s well known as one of the toughest foot races on earth. I needed to find a “Band of Brothers” that would be insane enough to join me in this latest crusade. As luck would have it I was able to find a team that is as hard as nails. I would like to introduce Tracey Loh and Theo Holzapfel as well as Chris and Bryan who are both Wounded Warfighters and have served our country valiantly. From April 7-14 we will be running somewhere between 150 and 160 miles (yes, that’s 6 marathons) in the Sahara Desert and in temperatures that can, and will, reach up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
If running wasn’t enough you’ll be pleased to know that we will be carrying all our food, clothes and other mandatory kit for the 6 days on our back as well any rationed water for each stage of the race. Weight is a key factor in the raced however on average we’ll be carrying up to 25 to 30 lbs of kit on backs every day as we make our way through the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains.
For any of you that are faint hearted I would(n’t) recommend looking up “how bad do feet get in the Marathon des Sables’ on google. I just hope that doesn’t happen to any of us !!.
So….we have a goal of raising a minimum of $50,000 between us for Disabled Sports USA and their Warfighter Sports program which provides sports rehabilitation activities, free of cost, in over 50 sports to severely wounded warfighters from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Ideally, like this to be substantially more.
We have all been training hard every day (sometimes twice a day) for the last 4 months and still have 2 months to go. This is such a worthy cause and one that is very near and dear to me. Please, please take the time to read this and do some research to understand what each of us are going to put ourselves through.
For those of you that are not aware, Disabled Sports USA serves wounded warfighters and civilians by providing adaptive sports opportunities. Your donation will help cover expenses for adaptive sports participation, including individualized adaptive instruction, adaptive sports equipment, transportation, lodging and meals for the warrior and a family member. Disabled Sports USA has overhead of less than 11%, so you can be assured your support will get to the adaptive athletes who need it.
Please help me by supporting Disabled Sports USA and help athletes with disabilities that want to enjoy the power of sports. hhttp://www.disabledsportsusa.org
