The Artworks For Youth Mission Statement:
"To provide free after school visual art instruction, mentoring, and academic support to under-served students in South Africa."
While that is a lovely mission, those words do not even begin to describe what this organization does.
For the past two years, I have had the honor to travel to Port Elizabeth with 18 high school students and two other chaperones. While in PE, we volunteered with Artworks For Youth and had the unique opportunity to see this incredible organization in action.
The kids participating in this program are coming from incredibly underserved populations. Located in the Joe Slovo township, poverty, hunger, and poor education are only a few of the factors influencing the lives of these children. Artworks For Youth is one of the only (or for some the only) organizations where these kids can have educational support, a meal, loving and inspiring adults, and a safe place to learn. From art classes to math support students can learn, have fun, and finally be kids.
Donations will directly affect the lives of the students who participate in Artworks For Youth. For example, the meal program at AFY is the most costly aspect and, for some of the kids, the only source of nourishment they will get each day. The smallest donation can make a difference.
It is hard for me to fully explain the importance of this program in a little blurb here, but please know my experiences working with Artworks for Youth have truly touched my heart and changed my life. I know for certain that every penny can make a difference for this program, and the lives of the children it serves.
