My name is Paige Gabitzer,
I am 15 years old and have had eczema my entire life. Sometimes when I was younger people would come up to me and ask how I had gotten so many bug bites all over my body. I usually explained that I had gone camping just so I wouldn't have to say that I had eczema. One time I was walking down the stairs and a girl behind me screamed because she had accidentally rubbed her arm on my neck.
Over the years, I have seen many different doctors. They all told me the same thing, that there is no cure, only treatment. They would ask my mom and me what medications I had already tried and then prescribe new ones. Eventually, the medicine would stop working and we would have to go back to the doctor's office and try again.
One day, my doctor suggested that I go to Camp Discovery, a free overnight camp for kids with skin disorders. I had so much fun the first time I went and I met a lot of people who are just like me. I realized then, at camp, that I am not alone and that there are some kids who are worse off than I am. Attending Camp Discovery always makes me happy and I want to share this experience with kids like me across the country.
