700 Miles For The Kids
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Nov 07, 2016
A little over a year ago I lost the most important man in my life to cancer. My Dad fought MDS for about 4 years before it quickly and aggressively turned into Leukemia. Our family and friends experienced firsthand how challenging it can be on not just the patient, who is fighting the fight of their life, but also on the family members helplessly watching, wishing there was more they could do. Less than a month after my dad passed, we learned that our nephew, Jacob, was diagnosed Leukemia as well. While a different type than my father’s, and with a good chance of being cured, it was still impossible to fathom what Jacob and his family were getting ready to go through knowing what my family and I had just gone through. It just seems so unfair for young children to have to battle cancer and other life threatening diseases before they have really even have the chance to experience what life is really all about. Fortunately, Jacob is a superhero and bravely fought with everything he had. His entire family and community (Team Jacob) rallied around him to help him stay upbeat and positive so he could beat the evil villain within his body. It is a true blessing that he has reached the remission phase and only requires maintenance treatment at the present moment. On Friday, February 5, 2016 he was finally able to go back to school and be with all his friends again. Seeing the smile on his face was priceless and a moment of sheer joy for all of us who love him.
Inspired and humbled by my father and my nephew, this year, I am making it my mission to raise money for two great causes. In doing so, I will be running over 700 miles between my training and races that I will complete. I will be participating in the follow events:
St. Patty's Day 5k March 13th
Sole of the City 10K April 16th
Frederick Half marathon May 8th
Baltimore 10 Miler June 4th
Charles Street 12 Miler September 3rd
Baltimore Marathon October 15th
10 K Across the Bay November 6th
I have chosen two foundations I would love to raise money for. First, there is St. Judes Hospital. St. Judes Hospital is a great organization that makes sure that every patient and their families are burdened with zero costs while helping their children battle the life threatening diseases they have. Second, there is The Sunshine Kids Foundation. This group organizes many events for kids with cancer to allow them to experience life and the joys it brings. I know one event Jacob was able to do through this foundation was going to Minute Maid Park, where he met former Astro Craig Biggio who pitched to Jacob and the others who attended that day so they could hit the ball and run the bases (and get autographs, of course!). Craig Biggio is the national spokesperson for this group and has been involved with them for years. It's a great foundation bringing joy to the lives of many kids across the country. I am hoping to raise at least $3,000 total between the two charities.
Please consider donating to one or both of these causes. Any amount will go towards helping kids across the country. If you would like to join me in any of the races or want to come support me during the race (I know I will need it on the half and full marathons) please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
To donate, click on the fundraiser team you would like to donate to and follow the directions from there. It is quite easy to do.
