Every year for the last six years, I've run to raise money to level the educational play field. For the last five years, I've also run for Practice Makes Perfect. Since Practice Makes Perfect no longer accepts individual donations as a B Corp, I've decided to raise money for another incredible education organization known as SFER or Students For Education Reform. I first heard about SFER when I was a junior at Cornell. SFER supports college students who have overcome education inequity in their own lives to become community organizers who push for education reform at a city- and state-wide level. The reason I've decided to support SFER is because they support the conduits who will ultimately bring about the changes we need to see in our most undeserved communities. In the process, they are empowering the next generation of reformers - albeit the cohort they are supporting are first-generation, minority, and more representative of the communities that they are serving. Undoubtedly, this was one of the main reasons why I continued my work in education reform post college. Because I had the first hand experience growing up in an environment that sets most students up for failure and had been granted an elite education; I felt a sense of moral obligation to continue my work in education. In the same way remarkable women were the drivers of the suffrage movement; black people led the civil rights movement; students will HAVE to be at the forefront of the education reform movement. Being raised by a single mother on government aid and attending some of New York City's most disadvantaged schools, I know firsthand how important the conversation around reform can be. In my neighborhood, it was the difference between life or death for so many of my friends. This year, I'm running for SFER to be able to send 10 more students to their national conference. Many of the students are the first in their families to go to college, come from low-income backgrounds, and will be learning life skills on how to organize and get thoughtful leaders elected to their school boards. With your support, we'll hit this goal and then some!
